Nicholas Drakos, 32, came to the attention of police about 9.15pm on October 4 when he pulled into a commercial loading dock in North Wollongong about 150 metres before a random breath-test operation that had been set up on the Princes Highway.
Officers at the scene breath-tested Drakos, who returned a positive reading, before a later breath analysis revealed a blood-alcohol level of 0.261.
The Wollongong man told police he had drunk an unknown amount of wine between 6pm and 8pm that evening.
On Tuesday, Port Kembla Local Court heard Drakos had learnt a lot from completing a traffic offender's program and had sought professional help for a drinking problem.
He will reappear in court on February 17 for sentencing.
