The incident sparked a dramatic rescue operation, which saw the 17-year-old boy winched to a helicopter from rocks between Killalea Beach - known as ‘‘The Farm’’ - and Mystics Beach.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra duty operations manager Inspector Geoff Senior said paramedics were called just after 1.30pm to assess a teenager who had jumped off a cliff and fallen heavily in the water.
‘‘From what we understand, his friends helped him to the rocks ... and he was accessed initially by a Bomaderry ambulance crew who were in the area at the time,’’ Insp Senior said.
NSW Ambulance helicopter ‘‘Rescue 26’’, with a flight paramedic and doctor on board, was also called to assist.
Insp Senior said the teenager reportedly lost consciousness prior to the arrival of paramedics.
The teenager was assessed by paramedics and stabilised at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital.
‘‘He was in a stable condition with some back injuries and also some abdominal complaints,’’ he said.
NSW Police rescue, Fire and Rescue NSW crews and water police were also involved in the rescue.
