Illawarra Shoalhaven Local Health District public health director Curtis Gregory said a separate case of salmonella had also been reported in the wider community. The latter case was the more common strain of salmonella typhimurium rather than the rare bovismorbificans strain present in the majority of the aged-care cases and appeared to be unrelated. Two aged-care residents have died after contracting the illness and 16 have been hospitalised.
NSW Health is working with the NSW Food Authority and IRT, with most cases occurring at that aged-care provider's care centres in the Illawarra Shoalhaven, South Eastern Sydney and the ACT.
The Food Authority has conducted testing at the aged-care centres and no traces of salmonella have been found.
Suppliers have also been investigated and a Unanderra wholesale bakery is still the subject of investigations after samples returned four positive results for salmonella.
