Wests Cardinals scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to snatch a 2-2 draw with Illawarra baseball premiers Northern Pirates in Saturday's round two clash at Cringila Park.
Pirates led 2-0 and had men on second and third in the ninth with no-one out, before Cardinals rallied through some clutch pitching from Trent D'Antonio.
The Sydney Blue Sox star struck out three straight batters and then, with their last at-bat, Cards had a chance to win it after loading the bases with none out.
Pirates player-coach Andrew Clifford made a key play at first base to save a run but Cards were able to score two runs to force a draw.
Both teams will view the result as a opportunity lost - Pirates had a two-run lead in the ninth, while Cards had bases loaded and none out but were unable to get the winning run home.
Both starting pitchers had solid outings with Pirates Lachlan Crawley throwing seven scoreless innings for nine hits, while Scott Sartori (Cards) threw four innings for three hits, three walks and no runs conceded.
Jesse Lynch and Liam Blackbourn had two hits each for Pirates, with Nathan Grogan (3/5) for Cards and D'Antonio 2/5.
Meanwhile, Dapto Chiefs became the only side to win their opening two games after a 5-4 home victory over Berkeley Eagles.
Chiefs scored four runs in the first innings and withstood a spirited Eagles fightback of three runs in the top of the ninth innings.
Chiefs starter Mitchell Simon threw seven innings for six hits and only one run conceded and had the better of his opposite Aaron Sloan who gave up 12 hits, two earned runs in seven digs.
Troy Green had three hits including an RBI for Chiefs, with Ben Garvey going 2/4 with 2RBIs.
Sam Kommorley and Scott Murphy had two hits each for Eagles.
The competition takes a break over Easter and returns on Saturday April 11.
