A lone police van and crime scene tape were the only remaining signs of the ongoing murder investigation at the Crana Place site on Sunday afternoon, following a heavy police presence on Thursday night and Friday.
‘‘We still have a crime scene set up there, so we are still utilising staff to make sure that we preserve that crime scene,’’ acting Inspector Kylie Macfarlane, duty officer for the Wollongong and Lake Illawarra Local Area Commands, said on Sunday.
‘‘At this stage, it looks like the crime scene will remain in place until at least midnight [on Sunday].’’
NSW Police officers found the corpse in a shared laundry on the grounds of the NSW Housing complex, so badly decomposed the gender could not be determined.
A police strike force has been established to identify the body, with missing persons’ registers a strong line of inquiry.
Investigators have released little information about the death, except that the body was found under suspicious circumstances and is believed to be several weeks old, but intact.
As of Sunday night, police were not in a position to reveal any further information about the progress of the murder investigation or if the body had been identified.
