Gerringong remain unbeaten after Warilla nailbiter

Gerringong kept their unbeaten record intact with Sunday's nailbiting 30-24 victory over Warilla at Cec Glenholmes Oval.

After falling behind 6-0 early, the Lions squared the ledger with hooker Nathan Ford's converted try.

Warilla took a 12-6 lead with Nick Nikitaras' try before the Lions took control with tries to Ford, Joel Doosey and Michael Brown. Joel Roberts converted all three tries for a 24-12 half-time lead.

The Gorillas hit back with winger Nathan Gallastegui's try to make it 24-16. Chad Lisch missed the sideline conversion but converted his own try two minutes later to cut the gap to 24-22.

Lisch then nailed a penalty goal to knot the score, setting up a tense final 12 minutes.

Lions halfback Rixon Russell's try beside the posts with eight minutes remaining broke the deadlock and Roberts added the extra points.

"I knew it was going to be a tough game, but we gave them some chances," Gerringong coach Mick Cronin said.

"They've lost a bit of depth but you're always happy to come here and get a win.

"We didn't play any trials so we're happy with the way things are going at the moment."

The Gorillas slipped to 1-2 for the season, while the Lions are a perfect 3-0.

Sunday's other game between Berry and Kiama at Berry Showground was postponed due to wet weather.

Albion Park-Oak Flats bounced back from the previous week's thrashing with Saturday's 18-16 home win over Jamberoo.

After conceded 58 points in round two against Shellharbour, the Eagles were far more committed in defence against the Superoos.

"The attitude was there and they all just worked for each other," Albion Park co-coach Adam Bezzina said.

"We had a bit more in defence, just that urgency to get off the line and get numbers in tackles. That was missing last week."

Mother Nature was on the Eagles' side against the Roos, serving up a stiff breeze and a downpour as the second half got under way.

"They had rain blowing in their eyes in the second half and that probably worked in our favour," Bezzina said.

"Our completions were at about 75 per cent in each half, which was really good in the wet."

The Eagles take on the undefeated Lions at Gerringong this Saturday.

"Everyone got through so hopefully we'll be able to name the same side, and having the same side two weeks in a row is something we didn't do all last year," Bezzina said.

"Coming off a win like that and getting the boys to back it up is what we're after. It's about finding that consistency."

Shellharbour posted their third straight win, beating Milton-Ulladulla 28-14 on Saturday night at Ron Costello Oval.

The meeting between Nowra-Bomaderry and Port Kembla was postponed due to the saturated ground at Bomaderry Sporting Complex.
