It’s believed the 51 year old had ridden out of Dyson Avenue in front of a Ford Territory on Peterborough Avenue just before 6pm, where he was propelled onto the roadway and left unconscious with critical injuries to the face and chest.
The man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics and taken to Wollongong Hospital, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
The 22 year old male driver of the 4WD was unharmed, but taken to Shellharbour Hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.
The passengers in the 4WD, two women aged 22 and 54, a man aged 57 and a baby, were uninjured.
Initial investigations suggest the man, who was riding north along Dyson Avenue, rode out in front of a Ford Territory travelling on Peterborough Avenue.
The impact caused the cyclist to be thrown across the bonnet and windscreen of the car before falling onto the road.
According to police, the man was not wearing a helmet and his bike was not fitted with lights.
The scene was examined and the bicycle and car have been seized for examination.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Lake Illawarra police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
