The actress - of The Chantoozies fame - is in Wollongong this week, playing a leading role in Sex with Strangers.
The play, written by Laura Eason, stars Goldsmith and Samuel Johnson as two writers thrown together during a retreat.
Olivia is a serious writer-turned-professor while Ethan is a Gen-Y blogger who has written a tell-all book called Sex with Strangers.
Goldsmith and Johnson will share their experiences with social media, online reviews and internet dating during a discussion session, Swipe Right: Dating in the Digital Age, at the IPAC at 5pm on Saturday.
"You can't really get the word out there about what you're doing without social media now, but truthfully, if I didn't have wares to push, I probably wouldn't do it," Goldsmith said.
"I've become quite social-media-savvy. It was created by my generation but we didn't experience it, so it's still a lot to get our heads around - there's always a good and a bad side to everything."
Goldsmith described the online dating game as "fishing in a big pond".
"It's a gamble, but it's like when you meet someone at a bar - they can lie about who they are. We've all had that experience, haven't we?" she said.
"I haven't gone online dating because I can't, but I'm not against it at all. I think it's very difficult to meet people nowadays: the world's got so big and work takes up so much more of our time."
Despite being in favour, the actress said she couldn't imagine meeting her soulmate through social media.
"Maybe if I put up somebody else's picture and didn't say what I did for a living, but then I'm doing what other people do, which is not giving the whole story," she said.
As for trolling and what other people thought, Goldsmith has one message - ignore it.
"People will take a look and they'll project whatever they want to on you," she said.
"I've been trolled and [it was] only when I started getting photos sent to me that were just disgusting I took the photos to the police and they tracked the number.
"I've had it and you know what you do, you don't read it ... because it's their messed up little world, it's actually got nothing to do with your reality. And if people are that bitter and they've got to unleash on you because you're public, I feel sorry for them."
