Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah has been told he can leave the club at the end of this season.
The Tigers released a statement confirming Farah had been "granted permission to investigate opportunities to continue his career at another club".
"Farah has been a key member of the Wests Tigers playing squad since making his debut in 2003 and has made an invaluable contribution to the Club both on and off the field in that time," the statement read.
"The decision was not made lightly but ultimately allows the club a chance to restructure the football team to allow for future success."
It is understood Farah is contracted to earn upwards of $900,000 next season. His four-year deal is due to expire at the end of 2017.
The Tigers are battling massive salary cap restraints and despite releasing Keith Galloway and failing to re-sign veteran winger Pat Richards, who is Catalans bound, the joint-venture's salary cap is still at breaking point next year.
Chris Lawrence has also been told he is free to look elsewhere despite having a year to run on his deal.
Farah, 31, is a life member of the Tigers and was part of their 2005 premiership win.
With the bulk of rosters filled for next year it remains to be seen which club could squeeze Farah under the salary cap. It is understood the Canberra Raiders were approached recently to gauge their interest in the NSW vice-captain.
If Farah does move on it will cap a turbulent time at the Tigers, having played 236 games at the club.
There were allegations he fell out with long-term mentor Tim Sheens before his departure at the end of 2012 while his relationship with Sheens' replacement Mick Potter was strained.
His 2014 was a headlined riddled year. The Tigers have struggled this season and remain wooden spoon-bound. The club have invested its future on halves Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks as well as retaining James Tedesco, who Farah played a pivotal role in keeping at the club.
