The doors are expected to shut on January 22 and could be replaced by a shop-front facility in the Dapto CBD.
“The state government has deliberately gutted the Dapto TAFE campus of students, teachers and services for the last five years,” Ms Watson said.
The Labor MP was informed of the campus’ future by a TAFE insider on Monday.
“TAFE Illawarra has been given a $100,000 budget to lease office facilities and intends to open a new ‘shop-front’ on the Princes Highway at Dapto,” she said.
“This ‘shop front’ will act as a ‘gateway’ for students and some short-term classes may be run from the new location.
“This is yet another example of the state government wasting money on leasing new commercial facilities while it has an empty campus standing at the ready to do its job just metres away.”
Last year, a leaked Cabinet paper listed the Dapto site among the campuses earmarked for sale across the state to raise $63 million to fund a shortfall in the IT budget.
A TAFE Illawarra spokeswoman said an asset management plan is currently being developed and “NSW Department of Education non-TAFE staff currently located at Dapto College will be relocating on January 22”.
NSW Minister for Skills John Barilaro’s office was contacted for comment.
