Sharks have been sighted at Bendalong Beach, Hyams Beach, Dolphin Point, Wairo Beach, Narrwallee and North Tabourie, with swimmers being evacuated from the water after each sighting.
Last week, dolphins set off the South Mollymook Beach shark alarm.
A NSW Department of Primary Industries helicopter took an aerial photograph of a 2.5 metre whaler shark at Hyams Beach last week.
Allan Bennetto, founder of Dorsal SharkSmart an organisation that alerts beachgoers and authorities to shark sightings, said a number of factors have contributed to the increased sightings of sharks in our oceans.
“It’s just that kind of year,” Mr Bennetto said.
“There are more sharks in the water with the warmer climate and there is also more government surveillance than ever, creating a perfect storm.”
Dorsal SharkSmart has a social media following of more than 250,000 people, with their software scanning 100 sites every five minutes.
Mr Bennetto said there has been an significant increase in followers from the South Coast in recent months.
“There has been a huge increase along the South Coast in terms of sightings, which has brought more awareness of us,” he said.
“People and government organisations have now realised the mobile phone application is a useful tool.”
Dorsal have plans to create a wearable waterproof device and automated drone surveillance are in the pipeline.
“You can’t detect every single shark but you can reduce the risk,” Mr Bennetto said.
