A second book on the history of prospecting and development of coal mining in the Illawarra, Southern Highlands and Burragorang Valley is attracting plenty of interest. The new Ron Cairns book is sub-titled Part 2 – North From Mount Keira.
It is the final part of a two book series which covers every coal mine in the region starting with the story of how a Coalcliff site was where coal was first found in Australia by shipwrecked sailors in May 1797. The book goes on to explain how there was a long wait until the first coal mine in the Illawarra opened at Mount Keira in 1849.
Cash sales of the book can be made at Coal Services-Mines Rescue on the Princes Hwy, Woonona and at the Southern District office of the Miners’ Union, opposite the German Club, in Northcliffe Drive, Kembla Grange.
Both books can be purchased on-line via the AusIMM website www.ausimm.com/shop. And a limited number of copies are also available for cash sales at Destination Wollongong.
