Daniel Frank Jausovec, 26, had just pulled into the carpark near Shellharbour public pool when he noticed the woman sitting on the grass nearby with her handbag next to her.
He grabbed the bag and ran off back to his car, however was pursued by witnesses, who reached into the vehicle and took his keys from the ignition.
The victim then negotiated with Jausovec for the return of her handbag in exchange for the keys.
Jausovec eventually handed the bag over before driving off. He was arrested a short time later at Oak Flats.
Jausovec pleaded guilty to the stealing in court on Wednesday.
Police said he was “extremely apologetic” for his actions.
He will be released from jail in November.
