The event recognised 24 athletes who currently hold a scholarship from the Illawarra Academy of Sport (IAS) in programs including golf, cycling, hockey, triathlon, netball, basketball and the LoneStar category.
Mayor Marianne Saliba praised the athletes’ efforts at the Oak Flat Neighboorhood Centre.
“Their competitive success is also a testament to the efforts of their families and coaches who are dedicated to supporting the ambitions of these young athletes,” Cr Saliba said. “We are proud to see life-long dreams being realised on the international stage and wish them all the best,” she said.
Council also presented the IAS with $15,000 sponsorship at the reception.
Established in 1985, the Illawarra Academy has helped produce top talent like Olympic gold medal kayaker David Smith and runner Ryan Gregson.
