GIVING birth in these hospitals has certainly changed for women.
The modern maternity room is equipped with a private ensuite bathroom, TV, WiFi and a video nurse call system. At the press of a button a nurse will appear on the TV screen to respond to patients’ needs promptly.
Many patients comment that it feels more like staying at a hotel, as these rooms even offer ocean and escarpment views.
“Having opened in 2016, Wollongong Private Hospital is the region's newest hospital, raising the benchmark for private hospital care in the Illawarra,” clinical nurse consultant Leanne Wallace said. “Obstetricians accredited at Wollongong Private Hospital are highly experienced and work very closely with our midwives to ensure patients receive high quality care.

“Patients have access to many comforts delivered by our team of experienced midwives and nurses. Our compassionate staff provide professional support and guidance whilst respecting patients’ decisions and values.
“Also, there’s a longer length of stay after giving birth – patients are encouraged to stay at the hospital for five-seven days post birth to take advantage of the assistance and expertise available to them. This enables new mothers to learn skills in caring for their newborns, establish breastfeeding and build confidence before returning home.
“Partners are encouraged to be involved and are included in the care of their baby. For a small additional fee, partners are welcome to stay overnight to provide additional support to new mums.”
Services at Wollongong Private include:
- Antenatal ‘preparing for childbirth and parenthood’ education classes on labour, pain relief, unexpected outcomes and postnatal care
- Four birthing suites, a 21-bed maternity unit and six-bed special care nursery
- Breastfeeding classes run three times a week
- Postnatal education classes
- Access to a lactation consultant during your stay
- Postnatal physiotherapy
- Quality gourmet meals by onsite chefs for many dietary requirements

New service at Figtree Private
FIGTREE Private Hospital is currently negotiating with the NSW Ministry of Health to open a brand-new postnatal support unit called the Illawarra Early Parenting Centre.
The new unit is the first of its kind in the region and private facilities in NSW, offering a residential support program for infants and carers, removing the need for Wollongong residents to travel to Sydney for similar services.
The new Illawarra Early Parenting Centre will provide assistance with common parenting difficulties including feeding problems, sleep and settling, attachment and bonding, parental exhaustion and skills support.
The service will be run by an experienced team of staff. Together with Wollongong Private Hospital, Figtree Private Hospital provides a complete maternity service from antennal care and birth to postnatal support.
