Many more grandparents are now carers.
“With the cost of home ownership skyrocketing and the cost of living steadily increasing, most family units now require parents to work to ensure financial security,” managing director Mark McCarthy of Wollongong First Aid (Macbec Pty Ltd) said.
“Before and after school care can be expensive so many parents now turn to grandparents to assist in the care for their children. Also a familiar and supportive environment helps when caring for young children.
“Grandparents taking on the carers’ role are taking on a huge responsibility and may need support of their own when taking on this role.
“Also their bodies are not as young as they once were so injuries take more time to heal.
“Older persons need to be aware of the increased risk of injury and be able to offer the best help they can.”

Life is moving at a frantic pace and with each new generation comes new challenges. We have seen big increases in children with asthma and anaphylaxis - this was unheard of when grandparents were growing up.
“Research and world best practice has provided huge advances in the training and delivery of first aid,” managing director Mark of Wollongong First Aid said.
“Treatments that were done in the past have proven to be detrimental to the injury or to the recovery from injury.
“Putting butter on burns or the Heimlich manoeuvre for choking can cause further injury and in some cases actually cause death.
“We need to learn the new skills, refresh skills and may need retraining for ideas that were taught many years ago.
“With increased risk of injury or if someone suffers a medical episode, they are also able to offer the best help they can.”
Wollongong First Aid is a locally owned and operated company providing training and supplies in first aid.
They offer FREE monthly community cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and encourage all grandparents / older persons to come and refresh their resuscitation skills.
“In addition to this free CPR training, during the months of October / November we will be offering FREE workshops on current first aid teachings and skills,” Mark said.
“These two-hour workshops will cover resuscitation, asthma, anaphylaxis, choking, drowning, childhood illness, burn bites and stings. Also skills learnt can be just as valuable in their own life setting.”
Wollongong First Aid provides a supportive environment, and the training in their workshop courses is able to be targeted to assist you, particularly if you have had difficulties with the physical requirements of providing first aid or CPR.
Everyone can benefit from these workshops.
