The state and federal governments are providing $4.6 million for two accelerating lanes from the rest areas.
Work on the lanes has started and will take place between 7am and 5pm weekdays until August next year. Some night work will also take place in November.
The westbound rest area will be closed for the duration of the work.
On top of this the NSW government will spend $859,000 to widen shoulders and install a median safety barrier along a 500-metre stretch of Picton Road between the two rest stops.
Lane closures and a reduced speed limit will be in place.
