Eric Bugle wrote “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” in 1971 to remember the 50,000 Australian soldiers who died in the battle of Gallipoli. It is easily his most remembered song and covered by many artists.
“He is a true international icon of folk music, and we are excited to have Eric as part of a very strong line-up of close to 150 acts,” festival artistic director David De Santi said.
Others on the lineup include Golden Guitar winner Darren Coggan, Irish maiden Eleanor McEvoy, US country star Kevin Welch, Canadian group The Small Glories, folk-punk band The Go Set and The Beez from Germany.
Mr De Santi described the four-day festival as a “smorgasbord of musicians, singers, bands, poets, comedians and dancers, with something for everyone”.
Tickets are on sale now for the Illawarra Folk Festival, January 18-21. www.illawarrafolkfestival.com.au
