Editorial December 14 2017

Let’s just keep the champagne bottles on ice shall we for the time being.

In terms of the fight to keep the Gong shuttle free, the battle has been won but the war is far from over. We will be keeping the baton close and handy.

The war will not be won until the NSW Government continues to fund the service and work with the UOW and the Wollongong City Council to secure the long-term future of the service. That still remains to be set in stone.

And please forgive us for not trusting Transport Minister Andrew Constance as far as we can kick him on this issue.

The Member for Bega still remains enemy No. 1 on the Illawarra’s Most Wanted List.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra Gareth Ward had a victory of sorts on Tuesday with the NSW Government announcing it would continue to keep the service free until the money pledged by the council and the UOW becomes available in the new financial year.

That does indeed mean the plans to introduce fares on the city loop on January 29 are shelved.

That was good news.

Yet the funding model between the NSW Government, the UOW and the Wollongong City Council still needs to be sorted and there is some ground to be made up before all parties are completely at the same bus stop.

Yes, Tuesday was a moment worth celebrating and  recognising.

A victory for all who have championed for the cause including this masthead who stood passionately for the Save Our Shuttle cause and will continue to do so.

Caitlin Foord, Emma mcKeon, Tyson Frizelland Tysloer Wright to name a few.
