Following a potential shark sighting, Kiama’s Surf and Kendalls beaches have been closed as a precaution due to a large baitball.

“Today there is a very large baitball attracting a significant number of seals just off Surf and Kendalls,” a Kiama council spokesperson said on Thursday afternoon.
“We’ve closed both beaches as a precaution.
“The Department of Primary Industries helicopter spotted what they think was a grey nurse this morning.”
A Mercury reader reported a sighting of a great white chasing a seal at Surf Beach on Wednesday.
Residents also reported a shark sighting at Bombo Beach on Wednesday.
The Kiama council spokesperson said a resident reported to lifeguards having seen a shark down the south end of the beach, which is unpatrolled and unsafe for swimming.
The spokesperson said the beach wasn’t closed following the incident, as the sighting was located down the south end of the beach.
“Council strongly advises people not to swim at that end of the beach, due to rips and other risks,” the spokesperson said.
March 30, 2016, marked the most serious shark attack to occur in the Illawarra in living memory.
Brett Connellan was airlifted from Bombo Beach after being bitten by a shark while surfing.
The Kiama Downs man was surfing off the northern end of Bombo Beach, Lake Illawarra police said.
