Mrs O’Mealley, 38, has been shortlisted from a strong field of nominees for the awards initiated by an Australian networking group for mums in business called Motivating Mum.
Mrs O’Mealley first launched her copywriting and editing business Oh My Word in 2004 as a creative outlet to her corporate career in financial services.
But when the former University of Wollongong student had her first child in Melbourne in 2014 she decided not to return to a corporate environment. She realised the long hours and interstate travel weren’t family friendly. And that running her copywriting and editing business from home would provide her flexibility.
“Through networking, collaborating with other businesses, and using social media as a platform to promote my skills, the business has grown quickly,” she said.
Mrs O’Mealley believes she has made the final three in her category of the Motivating Mum National Business Brilliance Awards for the level of engagement she attracts. “For me social media success is utilising the social media platform to boost your business”.
“In that regard it is working for me. I get lots of referrals and collaborations with other businesses,” she said.
A Typo Tuesday initiative is one way she does that. It involves her and people around the nation identifying signs and marketing material they see and her suggesting ways it can be improved.
Mrs O’Mealley does not know who nominated her for the national award and feels privileged to have the chance of being one of 12 mothers business named as the best in their field at the National Business Brilliance Awards in Melbourne on May 26.
The awards are judged on merit by other mums in business.
