Comedy wasn’t the obvious first choice for the actor and singer, but discovered he had quite a skill when he was cast for Whose Line Is It Anyway in 1998.
“I’d done improv for 10 years before that with a group but it wasn’t something that I really took seriously,” he said. “I knew that I could make stuff up and I knew that I was good at it, but I didn’t know it would yield any fruit.”
Brady now boasts an extensive list of acting, singing and theatre credits but said his favourite would be his recent fling playing drag queen Lola in the Broadway production of Kinky Boots.
One thing that has made work “frustrating” at times is battling with depression and anxiety. Though he said he’s just like anyone else trying to cope with mental health.
“I think it can be frustrating sometimes and ironic for someone who’s job is to bring happiness to people when you’re finding a problem having that yourself,” he said.
“But I think one can help the other. When I’m on stage and I see a room full of laughing people that of course makes me feel good. The fact that I’ve made them feel good and it makes me feel good … that’s a positive thing and goes against anxiety.”
Wayne Brady will perform at WIN Entertainment Centre on Saturday June 16. Tickets via www.wsec.com.au
