Wollongong City Council is in the process of altering the Foley St-Gipps Rd intersection, adding a right-turn only lane on Foley St.
Since then, a number of motorists have almost been caught out, only noticing the right-turn arrow marking on the road at the last minute and quickly merging into the left lane.
A council spokesman said the change was aimed at dealing with the spate of accidents at the intersection.

“There were numerous crashes over the most recent five-year review period with three serious crashes involving injury,” the spokesman said.
The serious crashes involved cars turning right from Foley St into Gipps Rd.
“Despite the availability of a right-turn phase the crash data indicates that filtering right-turn vehicles are coming into conflict with oncoming vehicles.”
The spokesman said the work is unfinished, with final line marking still to be completed.
He said council will look to revise the level of signage on the southbound approach to the intersection in light of the confusion the changes seem to be causing motorists.
