On Wednesday, the council and Frasers Property announced a contractor to install the 270-berth development.
United Kingdom firm Walcon Marine has been awarded the $15 million tender, with the developers touting the overseas company’s record of installing more than more than 100,000 boat berths across the world.
Queensland’s Port of Airlie and Perth’s Elizabeth Quay are among Walcom’s other Australian projects.
The marina contract covers the construction of piling, floating pontoon berths and pontoons for commercial vessels and a public boat ramp, as well as a public jetty.
The first stage, of 115 berths, is expected to be complete by the middle of next year, with further space for boats to be built on demand.
Frasers development director Glenn Colquhoun has labelled the mooring – which was recently officially named Shellharbour Marina – as one of the most significant pieces of marine infrastructure in NSW.
“The marina precinct will provide regionally significant recreational boating facilities and serve as a catalyst for a coastal tourism hub south of Sydney,” he said.
The city’s mayor, Marianne Saliba said the marina contract was another milestone for the council’s $1.5 billion housing development project.
Work on digging out the larger boat harbour project has been underway for several years, and is due to be complete by early next year.
