As part of Merrigong Theatre Company’s mission to bring more quality live entertainement to Wollongong Town Hall radio personality, TV star and perfomer Lucy Holmes is coming to town.
Her goal is for people to feel like they really are at a Kylie Minogue concert.
Holmes co-stars with Ronan Keating and other well known Australian peformers in Channel 7’s All Together Now which goes to air in coming weeks.
She was so keen to visit Wollongong with 100% KYLIE that she scheduled the show as soon after three weeks of filming wrapped up in Sydney.
Holmes is on breakfast radio in Melbourne and will fly to Sydney and then travel down to Wollongong as soon as she comes off air on July 6.
“I love doing the show. I tour on weekends when I can. My life is definitely hectic and crazy but it is such a blessing to be able to work as a performer. I don’t take if for granted,” she said.
100% KYLIE celebrates 30 years of the Princess of Pop’s music in a full concert production with 13 costume changes, live band and dance troupe.
“I have been a professional performer my whole life,” Holmes said.
“I studied music theatre and had always been told I looked like Kylie from the age of 16. I could mimic her voice and would do some of her songs at different gigs.”
An agent spotted Holmes one night and told her she would be perfect for a tribute show.
“It has turned into a big two hour production that has toured the world. It has been quite incredible,” she said.
Now into her 17th year of touring the show Holmes has performed as Kylie concerts 850 times in 17 countries including Spain, China, Dubai, Singapore, Thailand, Macau, Vietnam, New Zealand, Indonesia and Fiji.
But Friday July 6 will be her first time in Wollongong.
“We call it 100% KYLIE because we try and make it as close to authentic as possible. All the costumes are complete replicas of what she has worn on tour,” Holmes said.
“The dancers are amazing. Over the years some of them have actually worked with Kylie. We are so excited to come to Wollongong. We would love people to come and see the show that even Kylie and Dannii call the best Kylie tribute show in the world. You can’t get higher praise than the Minogue sisters calling it that. We love to entertain and we love people to leave with a smile on their face having danced the night away.”
Holmes said there was no shortage of material to put in the two hour show.
“She has 30 years of music and so many number ones. So literally people know every single song we play and sing along,” she said.
“We find people like the show regardless of whether or not they are a Kylie fan. Everyone knows the music. If we did all her hits we would be there for hours and hours. But two hours of her number ones is quite amazing. We do the ones everyone wants to hear. Everyone wants to hear Locomotion and everyone wants to hear Can’t Get You Outta My Head.”
Holmes said people also loved the show because it was such a big spectacle. She described it as “very cabaret style”.
She feels honoured to be able to bring such a show to Wollongong Town Hall just a few weeks after Guy Sebastian.
“It sounds great what they are trying to do,” she said.
“It is exciting to be part of it. There is nothing like live music. You have got to try and keep it alive in city’s and towns.”
Holmes is so highly regarded for her Kylie performances she has been invited to England a couple of times to play the role.
“I was flown to London to be Kylie’s body double for an advert that she was meant to film but couldn’t. So I filmed the advert as Kylie for her. It was for Magnum ice cream. And I was flown there for a TV show last year. It was a big BBC special.”
Channel 7’s All Together Now features a panel of judges who are all performers in the industry.
Holmes expects it to go to air within two months.
“An act comes out and it is there job to try and get the whole panel standing on their feet and dancing and pushing the button. It is a lot of fun. It is going to be a great show,” she said.
