Jeff Penza’s title defence of the Kembla Grange jockeys’ premiership may only have been made official on Wednesday, but the leading provincial hoop has long had his hands firmly gripped to the title.
Penza’s 149 point haul for the 2017-18 season outdid his 141 point effort from twelve months ago and propelled him more than 20 winners clear of his nearest rival.
The jockey’s healthy working relationship with Godolphin again proved to be a key factor in his success at the Illawarra Turf Club.
Keaghan Latham (86 points) and Mitchell Bell (84 points) led the chasing pack.
Penza’s performance at Kembla helped him finish second overall in New South Wales for provincial winners, with 69 victories for the season.
Only Brenton Avdulla, who claimed the Sydney jockeys’ title for the first time in his career, had more success on provincial tracks after chalking up 70 winners for the calendar year.
