The new Integrated Hip & Knee Clinic aims to partner GP, medical and physiotherapy services with access to orthopaedic specialists all at the same time. This will reduce waiting times and costs for patients.
This unique model of care was developed by the pioneering Integrated Specialist Healthcare (ISHC) group (orthopaedic surgeons Dr Anthony Leong and Dr Chad Todhunter) in conjunction with NSW Health and Ramsay Health Care while partnering with leading allied health providers and GPs in the Illawarra.
“The objective is to save both time and money by allowing patients to move quickly through the clinic without the need for lengthy waiting times and specialist referrals. A patient can be seen by a GP, physio and specialist on the same day, creating a fast track pathway to the specialist if there is a need for surgery. We believe this maximises the overall quality of care,” Dr Anthony Leong said.

The Integrated Hip & Knee Clinic allows immediate assessment and treatment of sports injuries, arthritis, chronic pain and difficulty with walking due to instability and degenerative joint disease. Patients do not need a referral and a single fee will cover medical and allied health costs, with rebates available from both Medicare and any private health fund.
Nothing like this has been attempted before and so the model is innovative and addresses many of the problems that patients face with the complex and expensive system of healthcare that we have in Australia.
The Integrated Hip & Knee Clinic model is based on the successful models of integrated skin cancer and wound care that have been run by ISHC for three years and are now expanding into other areas of care including joint disease as well as obesity and weight loss.
“Our focus is always on the patient,” says Professor Deva, ISHC director and driver behind many of these new models of care. “Today, the cost of healthcare and the difficulty in accessing timely treatment for chronic disease is starting to really hurt.
“All Australians have the right to good quality healthcare but at an affordable price – I am excited to bring this new clinic to life and hope that it will serve the people of the Illawarra well.”
