Samuel Marin, 18, was unlicensed and not wearing a helmet when he and a male passenger tore along the track on the afternoon of March 27, reaching speeds of up to 50km/h while dodging runners and cyclists.
Two women were twice forced to push their prams out of the way to avoid being hit by Marin, who later admitted his “skylarking” on the bike was “stupid”.
In court last week, Marin’s lawyer said his client accepted full responsibility for his actions, which were committed in a “spur of the moment” decision.
“It was the stupid, split-second behaviour of a very immature man who was joy-riding,” defence lawyer Jonathan Kearney said.
“He didn’t think about the consequences of his actions when he was riding the bike.”
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie sentenced Marin to eight months jail with a non-parole period of five months and fined him $600.
She also banned him from applying for a licence for two years.
“You’re not quite three months into being an adult, you’ve got no licence, you’re riding a motorbike without a licence, you’ve got a passenger with you on the bike and neither of you are wearing helmets,” she said.
“You’re riding this bike at high speed directly towards two women pushing prams with babies and you only just missed them.
“In terms of dangerous driving, this is right up at the top end, coupled with your lack of experience as a rider.”
