Illawarra residents are leaving more than $1 million in green slip refunds unclaimed.

But they’re not alone – across the state there is $58 million in refunds just waiting for someone to claim it.
The deadline for refunds was originally September 30 but with such large amounts still outstanding NSW Finance Minister Victor Dominello decided to push the deadline out to June 30 next year.
In June this year, the Mercury reported there were 94,568 green slip refunds in Wollongong unclaimed – which equated to $3.37 million.
While some people were then inspired to get their money, there are still 33,475 eligible policies in the Illawarra waiting to be claimed on.
The total amount still unclaimed is $1.5 million.

It’s the central Wollongong postcode of 2500 – including the city CBD, Gwynneville, Keiraville and Mangerton – that is the worst when it comes to collecting that refund.
There are 5829 unclaimed policies in the 2500 postcode, accounting for $290,665.57

Next in line is the 2530 postcode – which includes Dapto, Kanahooka and Horsley.
Residents in those suburbs have yet to claim $224,967.55 in green slip refunds.
The Corrimal area’s 2518 postcode rounds out the top three with $127,315.79 in refunds just sitting there.
One Illawarra postcode has no refunds outstanding. That would be the 2522 – aka the University of Wollongong – which has claimed $1027.18.
The next-best is the 2505 Port Kembla postcode with $39,235.41 in outstanding funds while third-best is Bulli’s 2516 code with $46,712.76.
The refunds can be claimed online through the Service NSW website 24 hours a day.
People can also claim their refund over the phone by calling 1300 287 733, or in person at a Service NSW centre.
The refunds are because green slip prices were reduced for most classes of vehicles on December 1, 2017.
Those who purchased or renewed a green slip before that time are being refunded the difference in prices.
An administration fee of $7.87 is charged on every refund and there is a $10 minimum refund figure.
If the refund is less than $10 either before or after the fee is applied then the motorist will receive nothing.
The price for a motorcycle green slip did not drop so therefore motorcyclists are not eligible for a refund.
