Unkle Cyril (aka John Maguire) and his fellow Swingaleles club members’ mission to show the ukulele in its best light has worked “too well”.
“There’s still lots of love for the ukulele. We thought the enthusiasm would die off but 10 years later our events are getting bigger and bigger,” Unkle Cyril said.
The Swingaleles secretary and fellow members will play some sweet sounds on the four-stringed Hawaiian instruments at the Illawarra Ukulele Springstrum.
The eighth annual event will be held at the Fraternity Club in Fairy Meadow on Sunday, September 16 and everyone's invited to the free party.
Unkle Cyril said the cheery ukulele festival will feature more than 60 performances and workshops, with groups from across the South Coast, Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Central Coast entertaining the community.
“As well as passionate beginners performing, there will be virtuoso ukulele artists to entertain with their skills as they perform jazz, rock and classical music,” he said.
There will also be ukulele merchandise and a competition for original ukulele songs.
“The event has become a hit with the local ukulele community. It gets bigger and bigger every year,” Unkle Cyril said.
“More retirees are also learning to play the ukulele.”
Springstrum runs from 11am-7pm.
