NSW TrainLink has trackwork planned for Sunday between Wollongong and Port Kembla stations, with buses replacing trains from 9am to 6pm.
The work is designed so that Sunday morning trains between Wollongong and Port Kembla can be reallocated, creating at least four extra services between Wollongong and Sydney.
“Extra early morning South Coast line trains to Sydney will leave Wollongong at 4:26am, 5:06am, 5:38am and 5:52am, stopping all stations to Tempe,” a Transport for NSW spokeswoman said.
“After the rides, special event trains will run from Wollongong back to Central every 10 to 20 minutes between 9:30am and 5:36pm.”
Cyclists in the Port Kembla area will still be able to catch a train to the start – the last morning train leaves that suburb’s station at 8.12am.
Meanwhile there will be a range of road closures on Sunday for the Sydney to Gong.
From 5am to 2.30pm a number of roads in the northern Illawarra will be closed, including Lady Wakehurst Drive (between Kell Ave and Otford Rd) and Lawrence Hargrave Drive between Stonehaven Rd and Chellow Dene Ave at Stanwell Park.
Between 6am and 3.30pm road closures in North Wollongong include Bourke St eastbound between Kembla St and Cliff Rd and also Marine Drive between Cliff Rd and Crown St.
Speed limit reductions will be in effect on key roads, including a 40km/h limit from Stanwell Park to Thirroul between 6am and 3pm.
Visit the MS Gong Ride website for full details of road closures.
