According to police, a 19-year-old man presented to Wollongong Hospital with a gunshot wound to his right leg about 10pm on Tuesday.
Detectives from Lake Illawarra Police District were contacted and launched an investigation.
The man was uncooperative but told police he was shot with a slug gun.
Lake Illawarra police Inspector Paul Allman described the incident, which happened in Berkeley, as a “shooting misadventure”.
Inspector Allman said alcohol was a factor.
“You’ve got a group of young blokes drinking alcohol and, either as a dare or tomfoolery, decide to shoot each other, and one ends up with a slug lodged in his leg,” he said.
It is understood the slug pellet was from an air rifle-style firearm and became lodged in the man’s buttock area.
He has since been released from hospital, after receiving treatment.
Investigations are continuing.
Anyone with information should contacted Lake Illawarra police on 4232 5599 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
