Timothy Dale’s history of domestic violence rang alarm bells for Magistrate Geraldine Beattie as she considered the 24-year-old’s case at Wollongong Local Court, Tuesday.
“For someone to be on bail for domestic violence [and have] new firearms charges before the court … it’s not a matter where cause [for why detention isn’t justified] is shown,” she said.
Officers from Strike Force Raptor South searched Dale’s home Monday afternoon.
They allegedly found a shortened .22 calibre rifle, eleven rounds of ammunition, an air rifle, a gel-ball pistol and 50g of cannabis.
Dale allegedly told police he had found the air rifle in a nearby paddock, and the pistol in the backyard. His friend had found the shortened rifle in a nearby paddock a few days earlier, he claimed.
In court on Tuesday, Dale contended the weapons were harmless.
“The were inoperable,” his lawyer said. “They were missing parts and could not be fired. For example, there were no triggers or firing pins in the firearms.”
Dale sobbed as bail was refused.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
The matter returns to court November 19.
