Wollongong led firefighter Cameron Thompson as applications open for Fire and Rescue NSW's recruitment campaign, 'More than Fire'

A childhood dream for many, the intake attracts huge interest to a multi-pronged trials process that includes cognitive ability, emotional intelligence and physical aptitude tests. 

Cameron Thompson, leading firefighter at Wollongong station, says he loves the “sense of worth” that comes from the job. 

“A lot of jobs are a thankless task, whereas people really appreciate what we do. You’re staying healthy at the same time and are in a dynamic work environment. You don’t know what you’re going to get each day, so it keeps it exciting.”

The physical aptitude test has been developed with UOW. Candidates must drag a weighted dummy for 15 metres – simulating a “firefighter down” scenario – as part of this.

Many of Wollongong’s firefighters have served for two or three decades, and show no sign of moving on – hence the highly competitive recruitment process.

Thompson says those who miss out on a position should not be discouraged. “I didn't get in the first time – a lot of people don’t,” he said. “It is competitive, but the more times you have a go at it, the better you’re going to get every year. A couple of friends of mine are about to start recruitment training next year, and both of then have tried four or five times.” 

FRNSW Assistant Chief Superintendent Brendan Cox said recruiters were looking for physically fit men and women who embodied the values of respect, integrity, service and courage. 

But increasing focus is also being places on diversity in the ranks, and more cerebral attributes such as problem solving and lateral thinking. 

“Personal resilience is really important and it’s also people who can tolerate intense situations and make good decisions in dangerous situations,” he said.

This year’s campaign is known as More than Fire – a nod to the diverse tasks – hazardous materials clean-ups, road accidents, animal rescues community engagement – that are a large part of the job. Applications close November 19. Visit the FRNSW website for full recruitment details.
