A low pressure system passing to the south of the state is bringing strong northwest to southwest winds.
In the Illawarra, winds are likely to pick up Thursday afternoon, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting damaging winds up to 70km/h with peak gusts up to 90km/h from Friday morning.
Winds are expected to ease by Saturday morning as the low moves further from NSW.
Locations which may be affected include Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Eden, Moruya Heads, Katoomba, Cooma, Thredbo and Bombala.
The bureau will issue an update at 5pm.
Meanwhile, strong winds have whipped up masses of dirt across the drought-stricken state, which is steadily heading to the coast.
A thick line of dust stretching almost the entire length of NSW is headed towards the state’s coast with a band of dust predicted to move through the region on Thursday.
