The man filmed himself driving along the shared cycleway and footpath to avoid the cyclists, who were riding side-by-side on Swamp Road rather than using the designated path next to it.
The video, which has been doing the rounds on social media in recent days, shows the man’s ute hurtling down the cycleway to catch up to the Lycra-clad cyclists.
He then hurls abuse at them.
“What's the point of us spending this money if you’re not going to use it [the shared path], you f---ing d---heads,” the irate driver shouted at the cyclists as he passes.
“Pull over, so I can have a chat,” one of the cyclists responded.
“F--k off, f---ing idiot. Use the f---ing bike track, you dumb c—t,” the driver yelled back.
The video was initially posted on CarMafia Facebook page and was then shared on the CarSociety Facebook page – under the title “This is by far the best thing I’ve seen this year” – on Sunday.
While some of the online commentary was supportive of the man’s actions, Lake Illawarra police didn’t see the funny side.
Community safety officer Sergeant Ellen Jackson said a 28-year-old Albion Park Rail man had handed himself in to police.
Sergeant Jackson said the man would be issued a future court attendance notice for a number of offences, including using his mobile phone while driving, offensive language and for driving on the path.
He will face Wollongong Local Court at a later date.
The Kiama Municipal Council cycleway project began in 2009.
A $470,000 section of the cycleway connecting Gainsborough Chase, North Kiama to Swamp Road, which winds along the Minnamurra River, was opened in 2012. That section ended at Swamp Road.
In 2014, a 650-metre extension along Swamp Road towards Jamberoo was completed.
