Wollongong is heading for a forecast top of 34 degrees, while Albion Park and Nowra should hit 39.
At 9.50am, it was already 27.3 degrees at Bellambi, 28.5 degrees at Albion Park and 33.0 degrees in Nowra.
If Thursday’s forecast maximum’s are reached, it will be the hottest day so far this summer at both Bellambi and Albion Park.
A gusty southerly change is expected to move through the Illawarra during the late afternoon.
The change with bring with it cooler conditions, as well as the medium chance of showers and the risk of a thunderstorm.
Cooler temperatures are forecast on Friday, with forecast tops of 21 degrees in Wollongong and 23 at Albion Park.
Meanwhile, Thursday’s predicted high temperatures have prompted the Australian Energy Market Operator to warn of potential power reserve shortages across NSW.
It follows two power stations breaking down on Wednesday in the lead up to Thursday’s expected hot weather.
AGL’s Liddell power station, in NSW’s Hunter Valley, and Origin’s Eraring power station on Lake Macquarie both suffered broken generators on Wednesday, taking about 1300 megawatts of supply out of the system, according to NSW Labor’s energy and climate change spokesman Adam Searle.
