But that all changed at the weekend, with the launch of the Illawarra’s first floating beach wheelchair at Bulli.
Ms Crumpton was diagnosed with primary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2013 and has seen a gradual decline in her mobility.
The 39-year-old from Towradgi can walk short distances, but uses a motorised wheelchair to get around.
It means tasks many of us take for granted, like walking on the sand or going for a swim, just haven’t been possible.
However, on Sunday, Ms Crumpton rode a wave of euphoria as surf lifesavers wheeled her onto the sand of Bulli beach and into the water.
At that moment, she was just like any of the hundreds of other beachgoers – her ability was no longer defined by the condition affecting her central nervous system.
“Six years ago, I used to go to MM beach with my dogs at Port Kembla and be able to jog the entire length of the beach,” Ms Crumpton said.
“So, to be able to get back in the water, it’s a big thing for me. It’s really exciting.”
The wheelchair has three large rubber wheels that, together with two armrests, allow it to float in the water.
Ms Crumpton’s verdict: “That was so much fun, I really enjoyed it … I’ll be back.”
Multiple Sclerosis Limited has teamed up with the Bulli Surf Life Saving Club to give people with limited mobility the chance to hire the floating wheelchair and spend a day at the beach.
John Blewonski, the chief executive of Multiple Sclerosis Limited, said the wheelchair – donated by the Honda Foundation – would not only assist people with MS but also be available at no cost for others with similar disorders and disabilities.
“This chair is a significant innovation for wheelchair users and will improve their quality of life by getting them back onto the beach and in many cases into the water,” Mr Blewonski said.
Bulli surf club president Keith Caldwell said lifesavers would be on hand to assist wheelchair users on weekends and public holidays.
