Emergency services were called to George Street just after 2pm on Tuesday following reports a car had gone 1.5m through a window and the brickwork at the front of a home.
Two Fire and Rescue NSW crews - one from Bulli and a heavy rescue vehicle from Wollongong - responded to the incident.
The crash has compromised the structural integrity of part of the house.
Firefighters have propped up the damaged section of building using supports, and the occupants have been told not to re-enter until it is assessed by engineers.
NSW Ambulance Wollongong Inspector Matt Sterling said there was one person, an 87-year-old man, in the car at the time of the crash. No one inside was hurt.
Inspector Sterling said the man was complaining of minor abdominal pain, possibly caused by contact with the steering wheel, but sustained no visible injuries.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital as a precaution.
Inspector Sterling said the man may have suffered a medical episode.
“From his recall during our assessment, he’s basically indicated that he has poor recollection of the event,” he said
