Motorists on Five Islands Road trying to turn right into Springhill Road know the pain of those traffic queues.

Those queues are often so long, drivers get stuck at two sets of traffic lights before finally making their way into Springhill Road.

That will soon be a thing of the past - the lights will still be there but Roads and Maritime Services is adding an extra right-turn lane to improve traffic flow.

"By introducing a third right-turn lane, the intersection will meet cater for expected traffic volumes across the next 18 years," an RMS spokeswoman said.

The existing slip lane from Five Islands Road eastbound into Springhill Road will be changed into a merge lane.

"Five Islands and Springhill roads are key commuter and freight routes within the southern region, forming a critical link on the road network," the spokeswoman said.

"Both roads cater to increasing commuter demand, local industry and commercial traffic as Port Kembla continues to expand.

"This upgrade will meet the demands of the increasing vehicle numbers using the intersection and improve traffic efficiency through Cringila."

The spokeswoman said the traffic in the opposite direction will remain as two lanes.

"Traffic modelling at the intersection showed movement south from Springhill Road into Five Islands Road will continue to operate efficiently into the future," she said.

Work on the upgrade will start in mid-2019 and take six months to complete.
