Blackadder Goes Forth is the fourth instalment of the comedy written by Ben Elton and Richard Curtis. It starred British comedy legends Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry.
It is this "love for the original comedy" that drove director Megan Harding to bring the characters to Wollongong.
"It has been a challenge, as the show and the characters are so well known, but I think we've achieved bringing the essence of the show to the stage," Harding said.
"The cast and crew love the show as much as I do, so it's been a fantastic experience with rehearsals involving plenty of laughs."
This instalment is set in World War 1 and features the adventures or rather misadventures of Captain Blackadder, Lieutenant George and Private Baldrick, as they sit in the trenches under the misguided management of General Melchett and his devoted PA Captain Darling.
The Wollongong Workshop production brings four episodes of the television series to the stage, as well as the characters that everyone knows and loves.
The show is not only funny, but also charitable on two fronts.
The rights paid to perform the Workshop production go straight to Comic relief, a charity that Richard Curtis works closely with.
Workshop is also doing its part by raising funds for Legacy, who care for the families of deceased and incapacitated veterans.
"My mother was a Legacy child, and I think given the fact that the show is set in war times, it seems only fitting to raise funds for those to help the families of those who give their lives in service of their country," Harding said.
Blackadder Goes Forth opens Friday, April 26 and runs until May 11. It plays Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.
A special 8pm show will also be held on Thursday, May 2.
Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 concession. Search for Wollongong Workshop theatre on Eventbrite or call 0431 875 721 to purchase tickets.
