Unanderra resident Mitch Christen started as a teenage fan, and later a referee and ring crew member with local promotions.
After a break from pro-wrestling to pursue other interests including acting, in April 2018 he turned promoter and launched Illawarra-based promotion, All-Star Wrestling Australia.
The promotion hosted a show on Saturday night at Illawarra Leagues Club.
Former WWE performer Orlando Jordan visited Wollongong as part of All-Star Wrestling Australia's one-year anniversary event, A Night To Remember.
Former Gladiators TV star John 'Vulcan' Seru also made an appearance, signing autographs and taking photographs with fans.
The event also showcased wrestlers from Auckland, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney and Wollongong.
Christen told the Mercury the aim of the promotion was to make Wollongong "a wrestling hot-spot".
"We want the Illawarra to be known for its great wrestling action and have even more people travelling from all over to come and get their wrestling fix," he said.
"It's my personal goal to try and get as many of the world's best wrestlers out here to the Illawarra, and continue to give these fans what they want from a wrestling product."
The region's pro-wrestling fans were spoiled for choice on Saturday night, with Illawarra-based promotion Rock 'n' Roll Wrestling also hosting the latest in its run of monthly shows at City Diggers.
