Bloomin' Art uses striking paintings from the gallery's collection as inspiration for 16 floristry experts, students and visual artists to create an arrangement in response.
TAFE Illawarra floristry teacher Carly Hallett said artists have used a modern interpretation of floral design and used similar colour schemes.
"It's interesting the principals of design of both techniques and being able to showcase how much they vary," she said.
"[I was] speaking to someone with a painting background earlier - their principals of designs are completely contradicting to ours, but we're both artists."
Long-lasting types of flora (such as tropicals and natives) were popular in creations as the exhibition runs until September 15.
Photographs of the masterpieces to take over once the flowers have wilted and no longer can be displayed.
Workshops will also accompany the exhibition: The Flora of The Illawarra Watercolour with Ann Clarke will be on Mary 25 and 26, and Traditional Chinese Flower Brush Painting will be on July 14.
A Writings and Readings event will also be held on June 23, where writers will read their responses to the visual and olfactory experience.
