The incident occurred about 5pm on Wednesday while the man was bushwalking up Mount Kembla, near the old mine site.
He was reportedly bitten on the right knee.
NSW Ambulance Illawarra Inspector Norm Rees said special operations ambulance officials went into the bush to retrieve the man, and treated him.
Insp Rees said there was no positive identification on the species of the spider in question, but said it was suspected to be a funnel web.
The victim was transported by car to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition for ongoing assessment.
