Kerryn McCann scholarship marks International Women's Day

The widower of marathon runner Kerryn McCann has presented a $1000 scholarship to a young Illawarra woman who has dreams of emulating McCann's athletic achievements.Greg McCann presented the scholarship to cross country and mountain runner Madison Rutter this afternoon as part of International Women's Day celebrations.McCann, a dual Commonwealth gold medallist, died of cancer in December aged 41.

  • Profiles: Kerryn McCann, Cate Stevenson, Aunty MaryTwo other scholarships were also presented at an International Women's Day lunch to honour Cate Stevenson, an Illawarra businesswoman who lost her battle with cancer last April, and the late Aunty Mary Davis, a respected Aboriginal matriarch who died last August.Lee, an 11-year-old girl in the care William Campbell College, received the Cate Stevenson scholarship, which will be used for singing lessons.Rhonda  Cruse , who worked  closely  with  Aunty  Mary  on  a  range  of  issues, received a scholarship after working for  more than  17 years  in  the  Aboriginal  community.International Women's Day Illawarra committee chair Judith  Henderson  said the scholarships honoured three truly remarkable women."With  the  recent  passing  of  three  amazing  Illawarra  women,  the  International Women's Day Illawarra  committee  believed  it  was  important  to  recognise  their  achievements  by  honouring  their  memory  with  these  scholarships," she said."When  we  approached  their  families,  we  were  thrilled  they  agreed  to  be  part  of  this  recognition  and   celebration  of  their  achievements.   We  hope  Lee,  Madison  and  Rhonda  will  continue  to  achieve  and  be  encouraged  by  their  scholarships."For full coverage see Saturday's Mercury.
