The Bureau of Meteorology advised wind gusts up to 90km/h are expected to develop late on Tuesday or early Wednesday across areas including Wollongong, Nowra, Bowral, Katoomba and Goulburn.
A cold front is expected to cross the state during Wednesday with Wollongong temperatures expected to dip to nine degrees by Thursday.
Gusts are expected to peak as high as 125 km/h across the Alpine peaks above 1900 metres later on Tuesday.
The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service recommended to postpone back country travel until conditions improve.
The Illawarra experienced strong winds on Monday with 90km/h gusts recorded at Bellambi.
Mt Keira resident David West is bracing himself for more wild windy weather after a tree crashed through a power line on his street and landed on a car, sidewalk and street on Monday night.
Mr West was inside his Kaloona Street home when he heard a sparking sound outside and found a dead tree next door had fallen in the strong wind.
"It fell onto my neighbour's car taking with it two powerlines, creating sparks and nearly starting a fire in his garden," Mr West said.
Mr West said firefighters and the energy company were quickly at the scene to fix the power lines and clear the road
He estimated the winds were around 70 km/h.
NSW State Emergency Service (SES) personnel in the Illawarra were called out to more jobs in the region on Monday night than any other in the state.
The first of two fronts coming through resulted in 40 jobs for the NSW SES in the Illawarra including 13 in Wollongong, four in Shellharbour and three in Kiama.
The majority of jobs were for tree branches down or trees threatening to fall in wind gusts up to 90 km/h. An SES spokesperson said that was closely followed by roof damage.
"All up since lunch time yesterday there have been 420 jobs across the state and 1000 calls," he said.
