The ongoing drama around Alen Stajcic's sacking, the short period of time Ante Milicic has had to put his stamp on the Matildas before the World Cup.
And then the 3-nil loss to the Netherlands in the warm-up game on Sunday, having been beaten 5-3 to one of the tournament favourites the US in April.
But there's still a sense of timing - perhaps even destiny - about this Matildas squad.
Sam Kerr is coming into the peak of her powers, and while she's yet to be properly recognised with a major international trophy or personal award, it's well-known she is one of the best handful of players in the world.

Kerr is a game-changer and it only takes one or two moments in a difficult Cup competition to change the course of history.
But no doubt Kerr will also attract more than her fair share of attention from rival defenders, with Olympic penalty shoot-out conquerors Brazil, as well as Italy and Jamaica waiting in their group in France.
Which provides Caitlin Foord a chance to become a hero of Australian football at her third World Cup.
Remember, Foord is only 24 and could play at four World Cups, perhaps even five if time and injuries are favourable.
She has found her role as an attacking alternative to Kerr and has a wealth of international experience, having also played a lot of club football in the US and with Sydney FC in the championship-winning W-League.
At big tournaments, it all needs to fall into place and Foord will play a key role, if the Matildas are going to move from being one of the best teams in the world to the absolute best.
Hopefully their time has arrived.
Keep looking ahead
It's also a remarkable opportunity for the Wollongong Wolves, now six points clear at the top of the NSW National Premier League.
The win over APIA Leichhardt puts them well clear of the chasing pack, with fourth-placed Sydney United travelling to WIN Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
If they stay fit and stay in the moment, they can make the most of it.
