Fans heading to the Dragons v Cowboys game were struggling to make 6pm kick-off as the city's roads came to a standstill following a double fatality on the M1.
About 7008 made it to the game, lower than the usual 10,000 to 12,000.
Live Traffic had earlier advised ticket holders to avoid driving to the venue and catch the train to Wollongong Station and walk via Burelli Street instead.
"We are sitting on Spring Hill Road heading north and ain't going anywhere," Steven Bayliss wrote on the Dragons' Facebook page.
"If your haven't left from the south yet don't bother."
Trying to get to the game..... How about delaying kick off?" Peter Morthen asked.
