Global human resources consulting firm Aon Hewitt annually conducts the survey on employee engagement, effective leadership, talent focus and workplace culture and identifies 12 organisations who stand out as great employers.
Peoplecare is the only Illawarra-based business in the top 12 and the only private health insurance company to ever receive the honour.
Aon Hewitt's evaluation scored Peoplecare in the top 20 percent of organisations for work/life balance, effective leadership, a high-performance culture and safety.
The national not-for-profit health fund based in Wollongong was particularly commended on its change management strategy and innovative solutions-based program that has helped guide employees through the government's private health insurance reforms and the commencement of Peoplecare's new chief executive Dr Melinda Williams.
Dr Williams said the achievement confirms Peoplecare's strong commitment to all 200 employees so they feel empowered and confident to deliver high-quality services to 80,000 Australians it provides health insurance cover to and 34,000 members.
"Putting people first and policy second is the way we have operated. That has been a focus for us as we move through change," Dr Williams said.
Head of people and culture Maree Morgan-Monk said the secret to Peoplecare's ongoing success was its culture and very strong supportive leadership.
Employee Yvonne Newnes said "that comes from the CEO all the way down".
A morning tea celebration is planned in August when Aon Hewitt visits Wollongong to present Peoplecare with its trophy.
The Aon Best Employers program is also seen as a chance for organisations to review and refine initiatives relating to their most important asset - people.
Dr Williams said Peoplecare is already using the survey results and experience to implement further enhancements to its people practices.
The goal is to seek continued organisational improvement and even greater employee engagement.
