Emergency services received reports of a blaze inside a single-level fibro home on Albert Street around 5pm.
A fire crew from Shellharbour station noticed a large amount of smoke as they approached the address and called in extra resources.
Arriving to find the house well alight, firefighters went into offensive mode using multiple hoses and breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control.
HAZMAT crews were called in to assist with the blaze due to asbestos concerns.
All occupants had evacuated and no injuries were reported.
Illawarra Duty Commander Andrew Erlik said the fire was extinguished relatively quickly, however the damage was substantial.
"Looking from the outside, the house is totally destroyed and whatever contents would have been destroyed by the fire," he said.
The cause of the fire is still unknown.
Firefighters have gone inside the house to conduct their initial investigation into where and how the fire started.
The scene is now in the hands of Lake Illawarra District Police.
Mr Erlick thanked the Fire and Rescue crews and other emergency services who he said did a "fantastic job".
